RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Secang (Caesalpinia sappan), a traditional Indonesian herbal ingredient, is widely known for producing a natural red color in beverages such as wedang secang. The heartwood contains brazilin, a natural pigment, along with flavonoids and phenolic substances that have attracted scientific attention.

According to research published in the journal Food Chemistry, brazilin from Caesalpinia sappan contributes to antioxidant activity and provides the characteristic red coloration of secang extracts.

One of the most important uses of secang is as a natural alternative for food coloring. Unlike synthetic dyes, plant-based pigments from secang are being explored for applications in functional beverages and natural ingredient development.

Compounds found in secang have also been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial potential. Laboratory studies suggest that brazilin and related compounds may influence biological pathways associated with inflammation.

In traditional Indonesian wellness practices, secang is commonly combined with spices such as ginger and cinnamon to create herbal drinks. This combination reflects Indonesia’s long tradition of using plants to make functional beverages.

Although secang is widely used traditionally, concentrated extracts require further evaluation regarding dosage and long-term safety. Standardized preparation remains important for product development.
