RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a culturally significant aquatic plant widely used in traditional medicine, food, and cosmetics across Asia. Beyond its symbolic value, lotus contains flavonoids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, and phenolic compounds that have attracted scientific interest for skin care, relaxation, and nutritional applications.

A review published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that different parts of lotus, including flowers, seeds, leaves, and rhizomes, contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. These compounds contribute to the plant’s long history in traditional medicine.

One of the growing areas of lotus research is its application in skin health. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids from lotus extracts are being investigated for their ability to protect skin cells from oxidative stress and support healthy aging processes.

Lotus seeds are also valued as a nutritional ingredient. They contain carbohydrates, plant proteins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, making them popular in traditional foods and modern functional food development.

The cosmetic industry has increasingly explored lotus extracts because of their elegant fragrance and botanical properties. Lotus-derived ingredients are commonly incorporated into skincare products designed for hydration, soothing effects, and premium natural formulations.

Although lotus has a long history of traditional use, concentrated extracts require proper formulation and safety testing. More clinical research is needed to confirm specific dermatological and health benefits.
