RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), known in Indonesia as bunga sepatu, is a tropical ornamental flower that has long been used in traditional beauty practices. Beyond its attractive appearance, the petals and leaves contain anthocyanins, flavonoids, mucilage, and plant acids that have attracted interest in hair and skincare research.

A study published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that Hibiscus rosa-sinensis contains phytochemicals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissue-supporting properties. These compounds contribute to the plant’s traditional applications in personal care.

One of the most popular uses of hibiscus is hair care. Traditional practices have used hibiscus extracts to support scalp health and maintain hair appearance, while scientific studies investigate its plant compounds for their potential effects on hair follicles.

Hibiscus mucilage content also contributes to its cosmetic value. The natural polysaccharides in the plant can provide moisturizing properties, making it attractive for botanical hair masks, conditioners, and skincare formulations.

The beauty industry increasingly explores hibiscus as a natural ingredient because of consumer demand for plant-based cosmetics.

Flower extracts rich in pigments and polyphenols are being developed for creams, masks, and personal care products.

Although hibiscus is commonly used externally, concentrated extracts still require proper formulation and safety evaluation. Individuals with sensitive skin should perform compatibility testing before regular topical use.
