RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica) is a common tropical grass found throughout Indonesia that has been used traditionally in herbal preparations, particularly those associated with urinary system support. Although often considered a weed, this plant contains flavonoids, triterpenoids, and other phytochemicals that have attracted research interest.
According to research published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Imperata cylindrica contains bioactive compounds with potential diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These findings provide scientific interest in its traditional applications.
One of the most recognized traditional uses of alang-alang is supporting urinary health. Herbal preparations made from the roots are traditionally consumed because they are believed to promote urination and help maintain fluid balance.
Research has also examined the anti-inflammatory potential of alang-alang extracts. Certain compounds within the roots may influence inflammatory processes, although more detailed clinical studies are still required.
Beyond herbal medicine, Imperata cylindrica has ecological importance because of its adaptability and widespread distribution. Scientists continue to investigate its chemical components for possible applications in natural product development.
Although commonly used traditionally, alang-alang preparations should not replace medical treatment for urinary or kidney problems. Individuals with kidney disorders or those taking diuretic medications should consult healthcare professionals.
