RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), known in Indonesia as akar wangi, is a fragrant grass whose roots produce valuable essential oil used in perfumes, aromatherapy, and traditional wellness practices. The oil contains compounds such as khusimol, vetivone, and sesquiterpenes that contribute to its distinctive earthy aroma.
A review published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products reported that vetiver oil contains numerous aromatic compounds with potential biological activities. Its complex chemical composition has made vetiver an important subject in fragrance chemistry and natural product research.
One of the most recognized uses of vetiver is aromatherapy. Its deep and calming scent has made it popular in relaxation products, meditation practices, and stress-management formulations.
Research has also explored the antimicrobial properties of vetiver essential oil. Certain compounds within the oil have demonstrated inhibitory effects against microorganisms in laboratory studies, supporting potential applications in natural personal care products.
The cosmetic industry values vetiver because of its long-lasting fragrance and compatibility with botanical formulations. It is commonly used in perfumes, skincare products, and natural deodorizing products.
Despite its traditional popularity, essential oils require appropriate handling. Proper dilution is necessary for topical applications, and further clinical studies are needed to confirm specific therapeutic effects.
