RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), known in Indonesia as nilam, is one of the country’s most valuable essential oil plants and a major contributor to the global perfume industry. The leaves produce patchouli oil containing patchoulol, sesquiterpenes, and other aromatic compounds that give it a distinctive earthy fragrance and unique biological properties.

According to research published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products, patchouli oil contains chemical compounds responsible for its characteristic aroma and biological activities, including antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.

Patchoulol is considered one of the major compounds contributing to the quality and value of patchouli oil.

One of the most important applications of nilam is in the fragrance industry. Patchouli oil is widely used as a fixative ingredient because it helps stabilize and extend the scent of perfumes, making it a valuable natural raw material in luxury fragrance production.

Beyond fragrance, patchouli oil has been investigated for cosmetic applications. Its antimicrobial properties have encouraged research into its use in skincare products, particularly formulations designed to maintain skin cleanliness and support healthy skin conditions.

Patchouli is also studied in aromatherapy because of its characteristic calming scent. The aroma profile of patchouli oil has contributed to its popularity in relaxation products, massage oils, and natural wellness formulations.

Although patchouli oil has many commercial applications, concentrated essential oils should be properly diluted before topical use. Direct application may cause irritation in sensitive individuals, and quality control is important because oil composition varies depending on cultivation and extraction methods.
