RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri) has emerged as one of Indonesia’s most valuable functional food crops due to its high content of glucomannan, a soluble dietary fiber with unique physiological properties. Once considered an underutilized crop, porang is now gaining attention in the global health and food industry because of its potential applications in weight management, digestive health, and metabolic nutrition.

According to research published in the journal Food Hydrocolloids, glucomannan extracted from Amorphophallus species has strong water-absorbing capacity and forms a viscous gel in the digestive tract. This characteristic contributes to its ability to increase satiety and slow carbohydrate absorption.

One of the most studied benefits of porang glucomannan is its potential role in weight management. Because the fiber expands after absorbing water, it may help increase feelings of fullness and reduce overall food intake when incorporated into a balanced diet.

Porang fiber has also been investigated for its role in blood glucose regulation. Soluble fibers can slow digestion and glucose absorption, which has encouraged research into their potential role in supporting healthier metabolic responses.

Beyond health applications, porang has significant industrial value. Glucomannan is widely used in food products such as noodles, jelly, and dietary fiber supplements, as well as in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Although glucomannan is generally considered safe, excessive intake may cause digestive discomfort such as bloating or constipation. Adequate water consumption is important when consuming high-fiber products.
