RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), known in Indonesia as ketumbar, is one of the most widely used culinary spices with a long history in traditional medicine. The seeds contain essential oils, particularly linalool, along with flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and terpenoids that support overall digestive and metabolic health.
A review published in the journal Food Research International reported that coriander contains various bioactive compounds responsible for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and metabolic effects. Linalool, the dominant compound in coriander essential oil, has been widely studied for its biological activities.
One of the most recognized traditional uses of coriander is supporting digestion. Coriander seeds have been used in herbal preparations to relieve digestive discomfort because their aromatic compounds may stimulate digestive enzymes and support gastrointestinal function.
Coriander has also gained attention in metabolic research. Experimental studies have investigated its potential influence on blood glucose regulation and lipid metabolism, suggesting that coriander compounds may contribute to improved metabolic responses.
Beyond food applications, coriander essential oil is utilized in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Its pleasant aroma and antimicrobial properties make it useful in natural fragrance formulations and botanical personal care products.
Although coriander is generally safe as a food spice, concentrated essential oils and supplements should be used with caution. Individuals with allergies or those taking specific medications should seek professional advice before therapeutic use.
