RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), known in Indonesia as adas, is an aromatic medicinal plant that has been used traditionally for digestive issues and in herbal preparations. The seeds contain essential oils, especially anethole, fenchone, and estragole, along with flavonoids and phenolic compounds that contribute to their biological activities.

A review published in the journal BioMed Research International reported that fennel possesses various pharmacological properties, including digestive support, antimicrobial effects, and antioxidant activity. Researchers highlighted anethole as one of the major compounds responsible for many of fennel’s biological effects.

One of the most recognized benefits of fennel is its role in digestive comfort. Traditionally, fennel seeds have been consumed as herbal tea after meals because their essential oils may help relax gastrointestinal muscles and reduce bloating and discomfort.

Fennel has also gained attention in women’s health research due to its phytoestrogenic compounds. Several studies have investigated fennel extracts for their potential role in managing menopausal symptoms, particularly hot flashes and discomfort associated with hormonal changes.

Beyond traditional medicine, fennel is widely used in the food, fragrance, and cosmetic industries. Its pleasant aroma makes it valuable in essential oils, while its bioactive compounds have prompted research into botanical skincare and wellness products.

Although fennel is commonly used as a spice, concentrated fennel extracts should be used with caution. Individuals with hormone-sensitive conditions or those taking specific medications should consult healthcare professionals before using medicinal doses.
