RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Basil (Ocimum basilicum), known in Indonesia as kemangi, is a popular aromatic herb used in traditional cuisine and herbal preparations. Beyond its distinctive fragrance, basil leaves contain essential oils such as eugenol, linalool, methyl chavicol, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds that have attracted research interest for oral health, digestion, and antimicrobial applications.
A study published in the journal Food Chemistry reported that basil essential oil contains volatile compounds with antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms. These findings support traditional practices that use basil as a fresh herb associated with cleanliness and digestive comfort.
One of the most promising applications of basil is in natural oral care. Research has shown that basil extracts may inhibit certain bacteria involved in oral problems, leading to exploration of basil-based mouthwash and herbal dental products.
Basil is also traditionally consumed to support digestion. Its aromatic compounds are believed to stimulate appetite and provide digestive comfort, while laboratory studies continue to investigate its effects on gastrointestinal function.
In addition to health applications, basil essential oil has become valuable in cosmetic and food industries. Its pleasant aroma and bioactive compounds make it suitable for natural fragrances, flavoring agents, and botanical personal care products.
Although basil is commonly consumed as food and considered safe, concentrated essential oils require proper dilution. High-dose herbal extracts may have different effects compared with normal dietary consumption.
