RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Rose (Rosa damascena) is one of the most valuable aromatic flowers used worldwide in cosmetics, traditional medicine, and aromatherapy. Although widely associated with ornamental use, rose petals contain phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and essential oils that contribute to antioxidant and skin-related applications.

A review published in the journal Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine reported that Rosa damascena contains multiple bioactive compounds responsible for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. These compounds contribute to the flower’s long-standing use in traditional preparations.

One of the main applications of rose extract is in skincare. Phenolic compounds and antioxidants from rose petals are investigated for their ability to protect skin cells from oxidative stress while supporting hydration and skin comfort.

Rose essential oil is also widely used in aromatherapy. Research suggests that the aroma compounds of rose oil may influence relaxation responses and emotional well-being through sensory pathways.

In the cosmetic industry, rose water and rose oil remain highly valued natural ingredients. They are commonly used in facial toners, moisturizers, perfumes, and anti-aging formulations because of their fragrance and botanical properties.

Despite its widespread use, rose essential oil should still be applied carefully. Proper dilution is necessary to minimize irritation, and individuals with sensitive skin should perform compatibility testing before regular use.
