RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata), locally known as bunga kenanga, is an aromatic Indonesian plant widely used in traditional ceremonies, perfumes, and aromatherapy products.
The flowers produce essential oils containing compounds such as linalool, benzyl acetate, germacrene, and caryophyllene that contribute to their fragrance and biological activities.
A study published in the journal Molecules reported that Cananga odorata essential oil contains volatile compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. These chemical components are responsible for the characteristic aroma and biological properties of ylang-ylang oil.
One of the most recognized applications of ylang-ylang is aromatherapy. Research has investigated its potential effects on relaxation, emotional well-being, and stress reduction through inhalation of its aromatic compounds.
Beyond aromatherapy, ylang-ylang essential oil has demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. These findings have encouraged its use as a natural ingredient in personal care products, fragrances, and botanical formulations.
The cosmetic industry widely utilizes ylang-ylang oil due to its pleasant aroma and compatibility with natural beauty products. It is commonly incorporated into perfumes, hair products, and skincare formulations emphasizing botanical ingredients.
Despite its popularity, essential oils require proper dilution before topical use. Undiluted application may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, particularly among individuals with sensitive skin.
