RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Papaya (Carica papaya) is one of Indonesia’s most widely consumed tropical fruits and has long been recognized for its nutritional and medicinal value. The fruit contains vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids, dietary fiber, and the proteolytic enzyme papain, which contributes to its potential benefits for digestion, antioxidant protection, and skin care.

A review published in the journal Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry reported that papain from papaya is one of the most important bioactive enzymes in the plant. This enzyme has the ability to break down proteins, making it valuable in food processing, pharmaceutical applications, and traditional digestive remedies.

One of the most recognized benefits of papaya is its support for digestive health. The papain enzyme and dietary fiber content may help improve protein digestion and bowel regularity. This has made papaya a popular functional food for maintaining gastrointestinal comfort.

Papaya is also rich in antioxidant compounds, especially beta-carotene, vitamin C, and flavonoids. These nutrients contribute to protection against oxidative stress and support normal cellular function, including maintaining healthy skin.

In the cosmetic industry, papaya-derived ingredients are widely used in exfoliating and brightening products. Papain enzymes are explored for their ability to remove dead skin cells, while antioxidant compounds help protect skin from environmental stress.

In addition to its culinary and cosmetic roles, ongoing agricultural and industrial research is examining the valorization of papaya peel and seeds. These agricultural by-products are being investigated as rich sources of natural antioxidants and bio-coagulants, offering promising pathways for sustainable waste management and green product development.

Although papaya is generally safe as a food, concentrated papaya latex and high-dose enzyme supplements require caution. Certain individuals, including pregnant women, may need to avoid excessive intake of unprocessed papaya latex due to potential biological effects.
