RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Binahong (Anredera cordifolia) is one of Indonesia’s traditional medicinal plants that has gained attention for its potential role in wound healing, antioxidant protection, and tissue recovery. This climbing plant contains bioactive compounds including flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, and triterpenoids that contribute to its biological activities.
According to research published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Anredera cordifolia contains phytochemicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds are believed to support cellular protection by reducing oxidative stress and regulating inflammatory responses during tissue repair.
One of the most studied applications of binahong is wound healing. Experimental studies have shown that binahong leaf extract may accelerate wound closure by supporting collagen formation, increasing fibroblast activity, and improving the regeneration process of damaged tissues.
Besides wound recovery, binahong has also demonstrated antimicrobial potential. Several laboratory studies indicate that compounds within the leaves may inhibit certain bacteria, supporting its traditional use as a plant-based ingredient for skin care and wound management.
The antioxidant properties of binahong have encouraged further exploration in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Natural antioxidants from plant extracts are increasingly studied as ingredients for products designed to protect cells and maintain skin health.
Although binahong has been traditionally used for generations, scientific evidence is still largely based on laboratory and animal studies. Standardized clinical research is needed to determine optimal dosage, effectiveness, and long-term safety in humans.
