RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Betel leaf (Piper betle) is one of Indonesia’s most culturally significant medicinal plants and has been used traditionally for oral hygiene, wound care, and herbal preparations. The leaves contain essential oils rich in compounds such as hydroxychavicol, eugenol, chavicol, and flavonoids that contribute to antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

A study published in the journal Journal of Medicinal Plants Research reported that Piper betle extracts demonstrate antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms. Researchers identified phenolic compounds, particularly hydroxychavicol, as important contributors to the plant’s biological effects.

One of the most recognized uses of betel leaf is in oral health. Traditional practices have used betel preparations for maintaining mouth cleanliness, and scientific studies have shown that its extracts may inhibit the growth of certain oral bacteria.

Betel leaf also has potential applications in skin care and wound management. Antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds in the leaves have encouraged research into topical formulations designed to protect skin and support recovery from minor skin problems.

The essential oil of betel leaf is also being explored by the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Its aromatic properties and bioactive compounds make it valuable for natural mouthwash, personal care products, and botanical formulations.

Despite its traditional benefits, the method of use remains important. Excessive consumption of betel preparations, especially when combined with tobacco products, may pose health risks.

Safe formulations without harmful additives are recommended.
