RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Cat’s whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus), known in Indonesia as kumis kucing, is a traditional medicinal plant commonly used in herbal preparations related to urinary tract health. The plant contains bioactive compounds such as sinensetin, rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, and essential oils that contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
According to research published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Orthosiphon aristatus contains phytochemical compounds with potential diuretic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These characteristics have supported its traditional use in maintaining urinary system function.
One of the most recognized traditional applications of kumis kucing is supporting kidney and urinary health. Studies suggest that the plant may increase urine production, which has contributed to its use in traditional remedies for maintaining urinary tract function.
The antioxidant activity of Orthosiphon aristatus is also an important area of research. Rosmarinic acid and flavonoid compounds found in the leaves can help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress.
Beyond herbal medicine, kumis kucing has potential applications in functional beverages and pharmaceutical products. The presence of standardized bioactive compounds makes it an attractive candidate for further development as a botanical ingredient.
Although generally considered safe in traditional amounts, excessive consumption of concentrated extracts may affect fluid balance. Individuals with kidney disorders or those using diuretic medications should consult healthcare professionals before use.
