Phyllanthus Niruri: Indonesian Meniran Plant with Potential for Liver Protection

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri) is one of Indonesia’s traditional medicinal plants that has been widely used in herbal preparations due to its potential antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and immune-supporting properties. This small herb contains bioactive compounds including lignans, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds that contribute to its biological activities.

A review published in the journal Phytotherapy Research reported that Phyllanthus niruri contains several phytochemicals associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The study highlighted that compounds such as phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin are among the important constituents responsible for its pharmacological potential.

One of the most studied benefits of meniran is its potential role in supporting liver health. Experimental studies have investigated its protective effects against oxidative damage in liver cells, suggesting that antioxidant compounds in the plant may help maintain cellular integrity.

Meniran has also been traditionally associated with immune system support. Research has examined its immunomodulatory activity, indicating that extracts from the plant may influence certain immune responses.

These findings support its long-standing use in traditional Indonesian herbal medicine.

In addition to internal health applications, meniran extracts are being explored for pharmaceutical development due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Standardized extracts are being investigated as potential ingredients in herbal products with controlled bioactive compound levels.

Although meniran has a long history of traditional use, herbal preparations should still be consumed responsibly. Individuals with chronic diseases, pregnant women, or those taking regular medications should seek medical advice before using concentrated extracts.
