Aloe Vera: Indonesian Herbal Plant with Scientific Support for Skin Healing

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Aloe vera (Aloe vera), widely known as lidah buaya, has become one of the most popular botanical ingredients in the global health and beauty industry. The gel inside its leaves contains polysaccharides, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phenolic compounds that contribute to its potential skin-repairing, moisturizing, and anti-inflammatory properties.

A review published in the journal Indian Journal of Dermatology in 2008 reported that aloe vera contains active compounds, particularly acemannan and other polysaccharides, which are associated with wound healing, hydration, and immune-modulating effects. The researchers explained that these compounds can support tissue regeneration by stimulating fibroblast activity and collagen production.

One of the most recognized benefits of aloe vera is its ability to support skin health. Aloe gel is commonly used in products designed for dry skin, minor burns, irritation, and sun-exposed skin because of its cooling and moisturizing effects.

Several studies have shown that aloe vera may accelerate wound recovery by supporting cell migration and collagen formation.

Beyond topical applications, aloe vera has also been studied for its potential antioxidant activity. Phenolic compounds found in aloe leaves may help protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which are associated with premature aging processes.

The cosmetic industry has widely adopted aloe vera as a natural ingredient in moisturizers, facial gels, shampoos, and soothing skincare products. Its ability to retain moisture while providing a lightweight texture makes it suitable for various skin formulations.

Although aloe vera gel is generally considered safe for topical use, oral consumption requires more caution. Latex compounds found beneath the leaf skin may have laxative effects and excessive intake can cause health problems. Proper processing and standardized products are important for safe use.
