RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian cardamom (Amomum compactum), locally known as kapulaga Jawa, is an aromatic spice traditionally used in Indonesian cuisine and herbal medicine. The seeds contain essential oils, terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds that contribute to digestive, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.
According to research published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products, essential oils from Amomum species contain bioactive compounds such as 1,8-cineole, limonene, and terpineol. These compounds are associated with antioxidant activity and contribute to the characteristic aroma of cardamom.
Cardamom has traditionally been used to support digestive health. Herbal preparations containing cardamom are commonly consumed to improve appetite, reduce digestive discomfort, and provide a warming effect. Scientific studies suggest that its essential oils may influence gastrointestinal activity.
Research has also investigated the antimicrobial properties of cardamom extracts. Essential oil components may inhibit certain microorganisms, creating potential applications in food preservation and natural antimicrobial products.
Beyond traditional medicine, cardamom has commercial value in the fragrance, food, and cosmetic industries. Its aromatic compounds are widely used in flavoring and fragrance formulations, while antioxidant activity supports interest in functional products.
Although cardamom is generally considered safe as a spice, concentrated essential oil products require appropriate handling. More clinical studies are still needed to establish therapeutic doses and long-term safety.
