Citrus Hystrix: Kaffir Lime for Skin Care Application

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix), locally known as jeruk purut, is one of Indonesia’s most valuable aromatic plants widely used in traditional cuisine, herbal preparations, and natural cosmetic products. The fruit peel and leaves contain essential oils rich in citronellal, limonene, citronellol, and flavonoids, compounds that contribute to antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

According to a study published in the journal Molecules in 2012, essential oils from Citrus hystrix demonstrated significant biological activities due to their high concentration of volatile compounds. Researchers reported that components such as citronellal and limonene contributed to antimicrobial effects and antioxidant capacity.

One of the major benefits studied from kaffir lime is its antimicrobial potential. Laboratory investigations have shown that extracts and essential oils from the fruit peel and leaves may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi. These findings support its traditional use in food preservation and personal hygiene practices.

Kaffir lime is also gaining attention in the cosmetic industry because of its aromatic compounds and antioxidant properties. Citrus essential oils are commonly explored as natural fragrance ingredients, while flavonoid compounds are investigated for their ability to protect skin cells from oxidative stress.

Beyond cosmetic applications, kaffir lime has been traditionally used to support respiratory comfort and body freshness through aromatherapy and herbal preparations. The aroma compounds are believed to provide refreshing effects, although clinical evidence for specific therapeutic claims remains limited.

Despite its natural origin, citrus essential oils require appropriate handling. Direct application of concentrated oils on the skin may cause irritation or sensitivity, especially when exposed to sunlight. Proper dilution and formulation are important for safe cosmetic use.
