RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Fingerroot (Boesenbergia rotunda), locally known as temu kunci, is an Indonesian medicinal rhizome widely used in traditional cooking and herbal remedies. This plant contains bioactive compounds including panduratin A, pinostrobin, flavonoids, and chalcones, which have attracted attention due to their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
A study published in the journal Phytochemistry in 2006 identified panduratin A from Boesenbergia rotunda as one of its important bioactive compounds. Researchers reported that this compound demonstrated biological activity related to antioxidant protection and modulation of cellular responses.
Temu kunci has traditionally been used to support digestive health and overall wellness. Its aromatic compounds are believed to help improve appetite and maintain gastrointestinal comfort. Scientific investigations have supported the presence of compounds with potential anti-inflammatory effects.
Research has also focused on the antimicrobial properties of fingerroot extracts. Several laboratory studies have shown that compounds in Boesenbergia rotunda may inhibit certain bacteria and fungi, supporting its traditional role as a natural herbal ingredient.
The cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries have shown interest in temu kunci because flavonoids and phenolic compounds may provide antioxidant protection. These compounds are important in protecting cells against free radicals and are commonly investigated in anti-aging and protective skincare formulations.
In addition to culinary and pharmaceutical applications, current industrial developments involve eco-extraction methodologies to harvest pinostrobin and panduratin A efficiently. These sustainable practices minimize solvent waste while maximizing active yield, making large-scale commercialization for green cosmetics and functional supplements increasingly viable.
Despite promising laboratory findings, most evidence for temu kunci remains based on experimental studies. More human clinical trials are needed to determine its effectiveness, optimal dosage, and safety for therapeutic applications.
