RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Bakung (Crinum asiaticum), also known as poison bulb lily, is a tropical plant commonly found in Indonesia. Besides being grown as an ornamental plant, bakung has also been used in traditional medicine, particularly for external treatments.
The plant belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, with all of its parts traditionally considered useful. Traditional uses include treating boils, ulcers, inflamed skin conditions, rheumatism, pain, and swelling.
Bakung leaves contain natural compounds, including alkaloids and flavonoids, which are associated with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Some studies have also reported antibacterial activity in bakung leaf extracts against microorganisms associated with skin infections.
Traditionally, fresh bakung leaves are used for rheumatism, inflamed skin, boils, and ulcers. The leaves are gently heated over low heat, then crushed and placed on the affected area as an external traditional treatment.
Another traditional practice involves warming or crushing the leaves before applying them to swollen or bruised areas. This method has also traditionally been used for muscle and joint discomfort, including pain in the back, shoulders, or knees.
However, bakung should not be used carelessly because the plant contains naturally toxic compounds. There is also insufficient scientific evidence to establish the safety and effectiveness of bakung as a medicinal plant.
For traditional external use, fresh leaves are heated briefly over low heat, softened or crushed, and then applied to the skin. The leaves should not be swallowed or applied to open, infected, or pus-filled wounds.
The use of bakung is not recommended for children, pregnant women, or breastfeeding mothers. Anyone experiencing persistent or serious symptoms should seek medical advice rather than relying on traditional preparations.
Bakung highlights the diversity of Indonesia's tropical flora and the traditional knowledge surrounding its use. However, medically proven treatments remain the safer choice, particularly for serious, persistent, or worsening health conditions.
