RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Do you often use Bluetooth earphones while working, exercising, commuting, or simply enjoying your favorite music throughout the day? If so, concerns about radiation damaging the brain may have crossed your mind, but scientific evidence offers reassurance.
On IPB University’s website, dr. Widya Eka Nugraha, a Biomedical Sciences lecturer at IPB University, said from a medical perspective, current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that Bluetooth earphones damage the human brain. “Not all radiation is harmful to the human body, because its impact depends on the type of radiation, the level of exposure, duration, and distance,” he stated.
Widya explained Bluetooth devices emit radiofrequency waves, classified as non-ionizing radiation, unlike potentially harmful X-rays or gamma rays. He explained that radiofrequency exposure can cause tissue heating, while Bluetooth devices meet safety standards without significantly affecting human tissues.
He cited a 2024 systematic review concluding that radiofrequency exposure from mobile phones likely does not increase brain cancer. The World Health Organization has likewise found no consistent evidence of harmful health effects below established radiofrequency exposure limits.
Instead, Widya emphasized that excessive volume and prolonged listening represent more realistic health concerns for frequent earphone users. He said prolonged exposure to loud sounds can contribute to hearing problems, which are commonly encountered in clinical practice.
Using earphones for extended periods under damp conditions, without cleaning, or sharing them may also increase infection risks. He additionally warned that earphones can reduce environmental awareness, particularly while driving, walking, or performing activities in public spaces.

Prolonged screen time and poor posture associated with device use may also contribute to musculoskeletal discomfort and fatigue. Regarding a 2024 study linking Bluetooth headphones with certain health outcomes, Widya said it could not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
He therefore urged the public to interpret such findings cautiously and consider research methods before drawing conclusions about health. For safer use, he recommends moderate volume, regular breaks, proper earphone hygiene, and prioritizing awareness of surrounding conditions.
Users experiencing persistent ear pain, severe itching, discharge, ringing, or reduced hearing should stop temporarily and consult doctors. These precautions can help users enjoy Bluetooth earphones comfortably while minimizing the more practical health risks associated with excessive use.
