Bali Performs First M-TEER Procedure, Enabling Non-Surgical Heart Valve Treatment

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The first implementation of Mitral Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (M-TEER) technology for heart valve treatment in Bali marks an important milestone in strengthening medical knowledge transfer between local specialists and international teams. The cross-border collaboration demonstrates the readiness of Indonesian medical professionals to adopt advanced cardiology procedures that meet global standards.

Cardiac Intervention Consultant at SCVC Bali, I Dewa Gde Dwi Sumajaya, explained that M-TEER is a minimally invasive procedure for treating heart valve disorders. The procedure uses a catheter inserted through a blood vessel in the groin and guided toward the heart.

“Unlike open-heart surgery, which requires an incision in the chest, this procedure is performed without opening the breastbone. Using a specialized device, doctors perform an edge-to-edge repair by bringing together the leaflets of the leaking mitral valve, thereby preventing blood from flowing back into the heart chamber,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday, August 24, 2026.

In this case, the patient was a 68-year-old man with severe mitral regurgitation caused by a degenerative process. He had experienced symptoms of heart failure, including swelling in his legs. After considering his condition and the risks associated with open-heart surgery, the medical team selected M-TEER as a minimally invasive approach appropriate for his clinical condition.

The M-TEER procedure took less than two hours. Using transesophageal echocardiography, doctors were guided in real time to determine the device’s position, ensure that the valve was clipped accurately, and directly assess whether the leakage had been optimally reduced. The recovery process was also faster.

“Collaboration with the international team gave us an opportunity to combine our experience and expertise in managing complex cases, while also strengthening knowledge transfer to medical teams in Indonesia,” said Suma, as quoted by Antara.

Suma noted that public awareness of heart valve disease remains a concern. Mitral valve leakage can develop gradually, and its symptoms are often mistaken for signs of aging or ordinary fatigue.

However, symptoms such as easy fatigue, shortness of breath, reduced exercise tolerance, or swelling in the legs can indicate a heart disorder that requires further medical evaluation. ***
