High Cataract Cases, Govt Partner with Noor Dubai Foundation to Free Surgeries

RRI.CO.ID, Banyumas Regency – Indonesian Deputy Health Minister, Dante Saksono Harbuwono, said the number of cataract cases in Indonesia had reached approximately 600,000. He noted that the figure represented detected cases, while the actual number was estimated to be considerably higher.
“There are approximately 600,000 cataract cases in Indonesia. That figure is based on detected cases; in reality, the number is much higher,” said Dante Saksono Harbuwono in an interview at Purwokerto Special Eye Hospital, Central Java, on Friday, August 7, 2026.
He explained that cataracts were a degenerative disease that generally developed as a result of aging. However, the condition could also be triggered by other factors, including eye infections, diabetes, and environmental influences.
“Cataracts are a degenerative disease, or a condition that can occur naturally as a result of aging. In addition, eye infections, diabetes, and environmental factors can also cause cataracts,” said Dante.
To address this, the Ministry of Health and the Noor Dubai Foundation are offering free cataract surgeries for 500 patients across Purwokerto, Banjarnegara, and Cilacap. The Noor Dubai Foundation is a UAE-based nongovernmental, nonprofit organization focused on preventing and treating blindness and visual impairment worldwide.
“We are receiving assistance from the Noor Dubai Foundation, which will organize cataract surgeries in Purwokerto and surrounding areas, as well as in Banjarnegara and Cilacap (Central Java). The target is to operate on approximately 500 people,” he said.
Dante expressed hope that the free cataract surgeries would expand access to eye-care services for Indonesians while reducing blindness caused by cataracts through faster treatment.
“We hope these free cataract surgeries will help people obtain eye-care services more easily and, at the same time, reduce the rate of cataract-related blindness in Indonesia,” concluded Dante. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
