RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Eastern Indonesia held its first corneal transplant program at Chasan Boesoirie Regional Hospital in Ternate, North Maluku, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The initiative combined corneal transplant and cataract surgeries to expand access to specialized eye care in the region.

The humanitarian program, themed "Seeing is a Blessing," was launched by North Maluku Deputy Governor Sarbin Sehe. It was organized through collaboration among the provincial government, Gadjah Mada University Alumni Association (KAGAMA), Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Gadjah Mada University, PT Erela, Duke GO, and the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association (Perdami).

The medical mission targets 18 corneal transplant patients and 100 cataract surgery patients. Specialists from Gadjah Mada University led the procedures alongside local medical teams.

Sarbin welcomed the program as a milestone for healthcare services in eastern Indonesia. He thanked the medical experts and partner institutions for bringing advanced eye treatment to North Maluku.

"On behalf of the provincial government and the people of North Maluku, we express our highest appreciation to Gadjah Mada University, PT Erela, and all parties involved," he said.

The deputy governor also instructed the provincial health office to provide full support throughout the medical program. He said the initiative is expected to strengthen Chasan Boesoirie Regional Hospital as a trusted referral center in eastern Indonesia.

PT Erela President Director Lily Radite Handojo, said the program reflects the company's commitment to improving quality of life through healthcare innovation. She said restoring vision can significantly improve people's daily lives and independence.

"Today, through cataract surgery and corneal transplantation, we are restoring people's quality of life," Lily said.

Organizers hope the program will become the starting point for broader efforts to prevent corneal blindness in Indonesia. They also aim to expand access to advanced ophthalmic care in underserved regions.
