RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The birth of two endangered Sumatran tiger cubs at a zoo in Texas has become more than a conservation milestone, serving as a symbol of the long-standing friendship between Indonesia and the United States and their shared commitment to protecting wildlife.
According to a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Washington received in Jakarta on Monday, October 5, 2026, two Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) cubs were born at Fort Worth Zoo, Texas, on July 1, 2026, and were introduced to the public on October 2 after zookeepers confirmed that both the cubs and their mother were in stable condition.
The cubs were named Barani and Malu. Barani, derived from the Indonesian word berani (brave), has been described as more active and curious, while Malu displays a calmer and more cautious personality.
Their arrival marks the first Sumatran tiger birth in the history of Fort Worth Zoo. The cubs are the offspring of first-time mother Ndari and father Rakan. At the time of their public introduction, the cubs were about 13 weeks old and each weighed approximately 8 to 9 kilograms.
Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Indroyono Soesilo said the birth carries broader significance beyond wildlife conservation because Fort Worth was the first city in the United States to establish a sister-city relationship with an Indonesian city.
Fort Worth and Bandung, West Java, have maintained a sister-city partnership since April 2, 1990. The two cities marked 35 years of cooperation last year and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding collaboration across various sectors.
According to Ambassador Indroyono, the presence of Barani and Malu at the zoo's Predators of Asia & Africa exhibit offers an opportunity to introduce Indonesia's natural heritage to international audiences while strengthening people-to-people connections between the two countries.
“Barani and Malu were born in the United States, but they carry Indonesian names, heritage, and a message from Indonesia,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
“They demonstrate that the close relationship between Bandung and Fort Worth, as well as between Indonesia and the United States, can continue to grow through education, culture, citizen-to-citizen friendship, and a shared commitment to wildlife conservation,” Ambassador Indroyono added.
The birth of the two cubs comes at a time when conservation efforts for the critically endangered Sumatran tiger remain a global priority, making their arrival both an important contribution to species preservation and a reminder of the role international partnerships can play in protecting biodiversity. ***
