RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has escalated emergency ground operations and habitat protection protocols as national high-confidence fire hotspots surged to 893, placing wild animal populations at severe risk across priority provinces.
Monitoring data from the ministry’s SiPongi system on Tuesday evening, September 29, 2026, revealed a sharp rise from 365 hotspots recorded the previous day. South Sumatra reported the highest concentration with 266 points, followed by Central Kalimantan with 132, Jambi with 75, West Kalimantan with 30, and South Kalimantan with 28.
As fires encroach on critical natural habitats, Ministry of Forestry records show that 254 individual wild animals have received direct emergency management and rescue interventions across 2026 disaster response efforts.
Field officers and Manggala Agni personnel are executing targeted evacuations, medical treatments, translocations, and herding maneuvers to guide displaced animals into safer forest corridors. Among the key species receiving urgent protection are Bornean Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, Sunda Pangolins, Slow Lorises, Leopard Cats, Silvery Lutungs, and Sun Bears.
To contain the habitat destruction, an integrated force comprising Manggala Agni, BNPB, military (TNI), police, and local agencies has deployed 61 aircraft nationwide, including 44 water-bombing helicopters and 17 weather modification units. Ground teams are prioritizing peatland areas, utilizing direct suppression, firebreaks, and subsurface cooling to extinguish persistent underground fires.
Ministry officials urged the public and private entities to report displaced or injured wildlife directly to local Conservation Center (BKSDA) rather than attempting independent capture, while strictly enforcing the prohibition on land clearing by fire. ***
