RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A gorilla named Komu took center stage during the 162nd anniversary celebration of Margasatwa Ragunan Park in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Jakarta Province. As part of the festivities, Komu received an enrichment activity involving food delivery via a portable rolling barrel.
The enrichment device is a movable barrel designed to encourage animals to engage physically with their environment. Food is placed inside the barrel, prompting Komu to move and explore in order to access his meal.
During the event, Komu was observed approaching the rolling barrel and retrieving the prepared food. This activity provided physical stimulation while encouraging more varied movement patterns typical of wild gorillas.
Enrichment programs are crafted to help animals express natural behaviors while in captivity. Such tools also prevent monotony and promote mental and physical well-being.
Spokesperson for Ragunan Zoo, Wahyudi Bambang, explained that enrichment activities are rotated among the zoo’s three gorillas. In addition to Komu, similar programs were previously given to Kumbo and Kilhi during their birthdays in May 2026.
“This is done in rotation because there are actually three gorillas. Kumbo and Kilhi had theirs earlier; now it’s Komu’s turn.” he said on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Komu is Ragunan’s youngest gorilla, born in 1997. Now 28 years old, he is described as more shy compared to his counterparts. “He feels he is the smallest compared to his two siblings,” said Bambang.
The enrichment activity is part of Ragunan Zoo’s broader commitment to animal welfare. It also serves as an educational platform for visitors to learn about gorilla behavior and care needs.
Following the feeding session, the event continued with a keeper talk, where visitors received information about gorilla life, behavior, diet, and husbandry practices. “The 162nd anniversary celebration is a momentum to strengthen our role as a conservation and education institution,” said Bambang.
