Indonesia Deploys Weather Modification After Anak Krakatau Eruption

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is carrying out weather modification operations following the ongoing eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. The operation was announced during the Online Press Conference on the Situation Following the Anak Krakatau Eruption in Jakarta on Sunday, 6 September 2026.

Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, said the operation aims to improve air quality affected by volcanic ash. The operation is expected to help wash down ash particles, particularly across Jakarta, Banten, and Lampung.

“Today, we are also carrying out weather modification operations. So the aircraft is ready at Pondok Cabe, and today the weather modification operation will be carried out until tonight,” Suharyanto said.

Suharyanto said rainfall could help volcanic ash settle onto the ground and reduce its presence in the air. He added that weather modification could also use water mist when rain-producing clouds are unavailable.

“Of course, weather modification operations are intended to help improve air quality, allowing volcanic ash to settle. During an eruption, one effective measure is bringing rain, allowing the ash to fall to the ground,” Suharyanto added.

The BNPB said volcanic ash has affected Jakarta, Banten, and Lampung following the eruption. It has also deployed 10 personnel to monitor conditions directly and assess impacts on affected communities.

The agency reported that affected areas span three regencies and 15 subdistricts across Lampung and Banten, including Tanggamus Regency. Local disaster agencies had reported no fatalities, while physical impacts were still being assessed by authorities.

BNPB has also checked evacuation equipment, warning systems, contingency plans, and government logistics stocks. The agency has begun distributing basic supplies and masks while coordinating health responses with the Ministry of Health.
