RRI.CO.ID, Ketapang - The Ministry of Forestry, through the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) and the International Animal Rescue Indonesia Foundation (YIARI), successfully evacuated a weakened adult male orangutan (Pongo pgymaeus) from a community oil palm plantation in Kuala Satong Village, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) responded to community reports on Sunday morning after the orangutan, which had been actively moving through the area since mid-August, was spotted in a severely debilitated state. Medical personnel administered targeted anesthesia, oxygen support, and intravenous fluids on-site while collecting blood, stool, and hair samples for diagnostic testing, alongside fitting the primate with an identification microchip.
Field teams noted active forest fires creating heavy smoke cover and a complete absence of local water sources near the rescue site, leading officials to attribute the animal's weakened condition to severe dehydration and prolonged smoke inhalation. The orangutan was subsequently transferred to the YIARI rehabilitation center for intensive medical observation.
Head of the West Kalimantan BKSDA Murlan Dameria Pane emphasized the broad ecological impact of regional land fires on wild animal populations.
"Fires do not merely destroy land cover but also exert severe stress on surrounding wildlife and alter their natural movement patterns, Continuous monitoring of animal movements in fire-affected zones is essential. We deeply appreciate the prompt reports from local residents and the swift coordination among all teams, which allowed this orangutan to receive immediate lifesaving medical intervention," Murlan said in Ketapang on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as quoted on the ministry's official website. ***
