RRI.CO.ID, Gorontalo - Facing threats from predators and an increasingly endangered turtle population, the Gorontalo Provincial Administration is intensifying conservation interventions in coastal areas. Through hatchery and turtle release activities at Boliohuto Beach in Boalemo Regency, the provincial administration aims to improve the survival chances of these rare animals while maintaining the balance of the local marine ecosystem.
The event was attended by Gorontalo Governor, Gusnar Ismail, and Junior Attorney General for Intelligence, Reda Manthovani. The animal release served as a momentum to encourage the public to heighten environmental awareness and protect species whose existence is increasingly threatened.
Gusnar conveyed that releasing turtles holds significant importance as these animals are becoming rarer and require protection. Predator threats in the wild make it difficult for baby turtles to survive, necessitating hatchery efforts to help improve their chances of survival.
“Finding small ones [in the wild] is already very difficult unless assisted by humans as breeders so they are secured," he said as quoted by Antara.
According to him, environmental preservation must go hand in hand with regional development. Efforts to protect animals and ecosystems are considered important so that development in Gorontalo continues to take environmental sustainability into account.
Meanwhile, Reda Manthovani said that releasing animals is an activity he often carries out when visiting various regions. Releasing birds and turtles, as well as planting mangroves, he noted, symbolizes care for the elements of air, water, and soil.
“Hopefully, for the fathers and mothers present, it would be even better to bring children along so that it is embedded in their memory that caring for or empathizing with fellow creatures is part of character building. That way, we will not harm each other in the future,” said Reda.
He expressed hope that local administration could make environmental conservation activities a cultural practice by involving children from an early age. Direct experience in caring for nature is considered important to instill environmental awareness and shape the character of future generations.
He assessed that concern for other living beings needs to be instilled through experience from childhood so that it becomes part of emotional memory and can influence human behavior in protecting the environment. ***
