Police Seize 98 Undocumented Songbirds at Bakauheni Port

RRI.CO.ID, South Lampung - Officers from the Bakauheni Port Police (KSKP) intercepted an illegal shipment of 98 undocumented songbirds at the Seaport Interdiction zone of Bakauheni Port, South Lampung, on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026.
The songbirds, comprising 35 sunbirds, 38 yellow-vented bulbuls, 19 spectacled bulbuls, and six prinia birds, were discovered at approximately 7.45 a.m. packed inside four plastic fruit crates within the luggage compartment of a white Toyota Hiace (plate number BG 7026 TC). Driven by a 22-year-old man identified as RS from Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, the vehicle was en route from Ogan Ilir to Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java.
Police confiscated the vehicle, registration documents, and transport crates before transferring all 98 birds to the Bakauheni Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) under Law No. 21/2019 on Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine.
Law enforcement officials reaffirmed that stringent border interdiction at major port crossings remains essential to preventing illegal wildlife trafficking and enforcing mandatory quarantine compliance.
Bakauheni Port Police Chief AKP Fransiskus Yepta Terang Ginting confirmed the seizure and detailed the inter-agency response. "The wildlife was transported without legitimate documentation, the birds were subsequently handed over to the quarantine authority, accompanied by an official handover report," Fransiskus said in South Lampung, as quoted by Antara.
He emphasized that port inspections will continue to be intensified to prevent illicit wildlife movement. "We will continue to conduct inspections and supervision in the port area as an effort to prevent the transit of wildlife that is not equipped with documents in accordance with regulations," Fransiskus added. ***
