RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) has taken swift action following an alleged wildlife conflict involving a sun bear and a resident in Pangkalan Gondai Village, Langgam Subdistrict, Pelalawan Regency.

Head of the Riau BBKSDA, Supartono, said a Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) team was immediately deployed to the location after the agency received information about the incident. The team brought a trap cage to support conflict‑mitigation efforts.

“We respond to every wildlife‑conflict report by deploying a WRU team to the field. Handling is carried out carefully, prioritizing public safety while ensuring the protection of Indonesia’s legally protected wildlife,” Supartono said in a statement on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

According to information from the village administration, the victim was allegedly attacked by a sun bear while working in his yard. The bear reportedly approached from behind, but the victim fought back, causing the animal to flee.

The victim sustained injuries and received treatment at Selasih Hospital in Pangkalan Kerinci. The Riau BBKSDA team then coordinated with village officials, local authorities, and related parties to identify the cause of the conflict.

The agency also formulated mitigation measures to prevent similar incidents. The WRU team, together with village officials, installed trap cages around the site of the incident. These cages are used to monitor the presence of wildlife and prevent bears from re‑entering areas close to community activities.

“Public safety is our top priority in every wildlife‑conflict response. We continue coordinating with local governments, security forces, and communities to ensure that mitigation measures are effective,” Supartono said.

The Riau BBKSDA reminded residents working in yards, farms, or areas bordering wildlife habitats to remain vigilant and immediately report any wildlife sightings near settlements to the agency or local authorities. (Misni Parjiati)
