RRI.CO.ID, Probolinggo – A forest and land fire has burned around 60 hectares in the Mount Bromo area of East Java since Monday afternoon, August 3, 2026.

As of Wednesday, around 10 hectares had been affected in Watu Gede, Sariwani Village, Probolinggo Regency. Another 50 hectares were burned in the Jantur area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in Malang Regency.

No fatalities have been reported. A joint team involving regional disaster management agencies, national park officials, forest rangers, and volunteers has been deployed to contain the fire.

Ground crews are using fire engines, water sprayers, fire beaters, and a water tanker. Drones have also been deployed to monitor hotspots and identify safe access routes.

The fire between Bantengan Block and Pusung Jantur was extinguished on Wednesday afternoon. However, one hotspot remained active in steep terrain that was difficult to reach.

Other hotspots were also detected near the border between Malang and Lumajang regencies.

Firefighting efforts have been hampered by the steep slopes of the Bromo Caldera and strong winds, which could cause the fire to spread further.

BNPB Head Suharyanto ordered aerial firefighting operations to accelerate the response. Two water-bombing helicopters were deployed on Thursday, August 6, to target areas inaccessible to ground crews.

BNPB has also prepared a Weather Modification Operation, depending on weather conditions and operational needs.

The national park authority has partially closed the Mount Bromo tourist area until further notice. Access from Malang and Lumajang, including through Jemplang Post in Ngadas Village, has been temporarily closed.

Residents and tourists have been urged to follow safety instructions and comply with the temporary closure.
