Cigarette Butts: A Hidden Threat Lurking on Global Beaches

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – An international study published in the journal One Earth, titled "Food and Beverage Plastics Dominate Global Shorelines: A Harmonized Rank-Based Assessment of Usage Types to Guide Interventions," reveals that cigarette butts are among the most dominant types of litter on the world's shorelines, ranking alongside food packaging and plastic bags.

The study analyzed over 5,300 beach litter surveys across 112 countries and found that cigarette butts were among the top three types of beach litter in 38 percent of the countries surveyed.

Due to their small size, cigarette butts are often overlooked and assumed to simply disappear after being discarded. In reality, however, the material persists in the environment for a long time before eventually breaking down into microplastic particles caused by exposure to sunlight, waves, and sand abrasion.

Beyond the plastic itself, cigarette butts pose a chemical hazard, containing residues of nicotine, arsenic, lead, and other heavy metals resulting from tobacco combustion. When submerged in seawater, these substances leach out and can potentially poison marine organisms, ranging from plankton and shellfish to juvenile fish.

This threat can ultimately extend to the human food chain, as microplastics and chemicals from cigarette butts risk accumulating in the seafood consumed by both coastal and global populations. The study confirms that similar pollution patterns exist across various countries, indicating that single-use products are the root cause of marine litter on a global scale.

Researchers emphasized that beach cleanups alone are insufficient to address this issue, as the root of the problem lies in consumption habits and waste disposal practices at the source. They advocate for upstream policies such as reducing single-use plastics, implementing reuse systems, and adopting extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes.

These findings serve as a global reminder that threats to the ocean do not always stem from large, visible debris. Without simple changes in habits such as not littering cigarette butts microplastics from items as small as cigarette filters will continue to pollute the oceans for years to come.
