RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya - The Surabaya City Government promoted mangrove conservation through the SIER Mangrove Eco Run 3.0 in Surabaya, East Java, Sunday, July 26, 2026. The event combined sports activities with environmental education to encourage public awareness of coastal ecosystem protection.

The event was organized by the Surabaya City Government, PT Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (SIER), and the Surabaya Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA). It was held at the Surabaya Mangrove Botanical Garden to commemorate World Mangrove Day and its third anniversary.

The annual event attracted around 2,000 participants, higher than last year’s participation of about 1,500 people. This year, organizers introduced a 5-kilometer Trail Run category through mangrove forests and fishpond areas.

Head of the Surabaya Regional Research and Innovation Agency, Agus Imam Sonhaji, said the new category received positive responses from participants. He said the trail route offered a different experience from conventional urban running events.

He explained that many participants were interested in experiencing a natural running track in Surabaya. He added that the event encouraged people to enjoy sports while learning about environmental conservation.

The event also featured a research and innovation exhibition involving 78 young researchers. The exhibition presented innovations from universities, schools, and research communities to connect research with practical benefits.

Agus said the event was expected to introduce the mangrove area as more than an event venue. It could become a destination for sports, recreation, nature appreciation, and environmental education.

“Alhamdulillah, around 2,000 participants attended this activity. For the Trail Run category, which was held for the first time, public response was very positive. More than 500 participants directly participated in this category. This shows that the people of Surabaya are enthusiastic about trying a different running experience,” he said.

Meanwhile, Acting President Director of PT Surabaya Industrial Estate, Rungkut Rizka Syafittri Siregar, said the event supported sustainable development efforts in Surabaya. She emphasized that environmental protection should go alongside economic activities and industrial growth.

“Environmental ecosystems are very important for industrial areas like SIER because industrial activities cannot be separated from environmental issues. Therefore, we see this activity as a form of real support for efforts to realize sustainable development,” she said.

Through the Mangrove Eco Run 3.0, Surabaya strengthened its environmental campaign through community participation. The city government hopes the initiative can inspire healthier lifestyles and greater protection for coastal ecosystems.
