RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Climate action became a key topic during the 12th Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC). The statement was delivered in Jakarta on Monday, July 20, 2026.
The assembly emphasized environmental protection as part of the Church's social mission across Asia. Leaders also discussed justice, peace, and care for creation amid growing climate challenges.
Vice President of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, said local churches increasingly embrace environmental responsibility. He said climate issues would receive greater attention throughout the plenary assembly.
"Issues of justice, peace, and integrity of creation are part of social action now in the mindset of the local churches in Asia. And we intend to pursue this more seriously in our conversations here in this plenary assembly." he said.
President of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, said FABC has established a Climate Desk under its Office for Integral Human Development. He said the unit is headed by Bishop Allwyn D'Silva of Bombay.
"At the FABC level, our Office for Integral Human Development has a climate desk for climate crisis, headed by Bishop Allwyn D'Silva of Bombay." he added.
Ferrão said FABC partnered with the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) and the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM). Together, they prepared a joint document ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.
The document promotes climate justice, ecological conversion, and stronger environmental responsibility among Catholic communities. FABC also continued climate cooperation with bishops' conferences from Europe, Canada, and the United States.
