RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - World Vegetarian Day is observed every October 1. The observance serves as an opportunity to introduce vegetarian diets while raising awareness of plant-based lifestyles.
According to National Today, World Vegetarian Day aims to promote vegetarian diets and healthy lifestyles. The observance also recognizes people who follow a vegetarian lifestyle and raises awareness of food choices, health, the environment, and concern for other living beings.
The history of World Vegetarian Day dates back to 1977, when the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) first observed the day. NAVS is a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 to promote vegetarianism and raise awareness of the benefits of vegetarian diets.
A year later, in 1978, October 1 was established as World Vegetarian Day with the support of the International Vegetarian Union. The designation marked an important step in introducing the observance to a wider audience.
That same year, NAVS also introduced Vegetarian Awareness Month, which is observed throughout October. The initiative aims to educate the public about plant-based foods and vegetarian lifestyles, including their health, ethical, and environmental aspects.
The observance subsequently gained international recognition through the first International Vegetarian Congress, held in India in 1978. The event helped expand global attention to vegetarianism.
Over time, World Vegetarian Day developed into an observance recognized in various parts of the world. It also became an opportunity to introduce plant-based diets to people interested in learning more about vegetarian lifestyles.
World Vegetarian Day is now observed every October 1 as an opportunity to learn about the history of the vegetarian movement while raising awareness of food choices and plant-based lifestyles.
