BRIN Partners with Polman Bandung to Strengthen DSSC Solar Cell Research

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through its Center for Electronics Research (PRE), signed a cooperation agreement with the Bandung Polytechnic for Manufacturing (Polman) to strengthen research on developing and modifying photoanodes to improve the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The partnership is part of BRIN's broader effort to advance photovoltaic device research as a solution for environmentally friendly and sustainable energy, while also reducing dependence on electricity generated from fossil fuels.
In an official statement received on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Photovoltaic devices are technologies capable of converting sunlight into electrical energy. With this capability, the technology is considered able to support the provision of clean energy in Indonesia, particularly amid the country's need to transition toward new and renewable energy sources.
DSSC is one type of third generation photovoltaic device regarded as a promising technology for solar energy conversion. Its advantages include low material costs and a simpler fabrication process compared to conventional solar cell technology, making it considered more efficient for further development.
Through this collaboration, BRIN and Polman will conduct research, development, testing, and prototype production of DSSC. One of the main focuses is the development and modification of photoanode materials based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) semiconductors, aimed at improving material characteristics, charge transfer mechanisms, light absorption, and the overall performance of DSSC.
The Head of Center for Electronics Research BRIN, Yusuf Nur Wijayanto, stated that research collaboration with universities is an important part of strengthening the development and application of electronics technology, particularly in the field of photovoltaics. "The development of DSSC solar cell research requires support from Polman, especially in terms of manufacturing and mechanical support, in order to transition electronic device research from lab scale to industrial scale," he said.
Yusuf added that the collaboration is expected to benefit both parties as well as the wider community, particularly in meeting new and renewable energy needs. He also expressed hope that the partnership would expand opportunities for research results to be applied more broadly and encourage continuous invention and innovation.
Echoing this sentiment, the Deputy Director for Academic Affairs and Information Systems at Polman, Aris Budiyarto, expressed hope that the collaboration would support the creation of clean energy. "Through this collaboration, we hope to strengthen the relationship between BRIN and Polman Bandung, and that this partnership can produce research results capable of generating clean, green energy that delivers meaningful impact," he said.
The development of DSSC represents a strategic step in promoting the use of solar energy as an abundant and environmentally friendly energy source. Through strengthened material and device research, along with collaboration between research institutions and universities, photovoltaic technology is expected to continue advancing to support the fulfillment of new and renewable energy needs while producing innovations that benefit the people of Indonesia.
