RRI.CO.ID, Malang - Brawijaya University (UB) is positioning itself more firmly on the international stage following the visit of New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, Phillip Nathan Taula, on July 22.
The meeting, held at UB’s Rectorate Building, in Malang, East Java, was not only a gesture of goodwill but also a signal of UB’s growing recognition among foreign partners eager to expand higher education collaboration.
UB’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Imam Santoso, described the visit as both an honor and a strategic opportunity.
“We already have three MoUs with New Zealand universities, but we want to accelerate the number of partnerships and expand the activities,” he said, as quoted on UB's official website.
UB showcased flagship programs such as Adjunct Professor, Visiting Lecture, UB STARS, joint research, and collaborative publications, initiatives designed to deepen academic engagement and foster global exposure for both faculty and students.
The visit also underscored UB’s ambition to become a world-class university. As a follow-up, UB will hold an online meeting with New Zealand Embassy staff and partner universities to finalize actionable programs.
“We want to immediately formulate initiatives that can be implemented, including how we can grow together toward becoming a world-class institution,” Imam explained.
For UB students, the cooperation promises tangible benefits. Through UB STARS, they will gain opportunities to study in New Zealand and participate in joint research projects.
International professors invited under the Visiting Lecture and Adjunct Professor schemes will further enrich classroom experiences with global perspectives.
“We can facilitate students to learn abroad and engage in research, while also bringing international professors here to broaden their horizons,” Imam noted.
Since 2014, UB has steadily expanded its international partnerships, and the ambassador’s visit reflects a rising level of trust and recognition.
With plans for seminars, symposia, conferences, and increased mobility for faculty and students, UB is leveraging diplomacy in education to strengthen its global academic network. ***
