RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Seblak is a popular Indonesian dish originating from West Java. Known for its spicy and savory flavor and distinctive aroma of kencur, or aromatic ginger, seblak has become a favorite among food lovers across Indonesia. Its main ingredient, softened crackers, is often combined with various toppings, such as eggs, meatballs, sausages, chicken, noodles, and vegetables. However, despite its tempting taste, eating seblak too often requires attention due to its ingredients and preparation methods.
According to Alodokter, seblak generally contains carbohydrates from the crackers and protein from added eggs or meat. However, the dish can also contain relatively high amounts of salt, fat, and monosodium glutamate (MSG), particularly when processed foods such as sausages and meatballs are added. Consuming it too frequently may contribute to an unbalanced daily diet.
Its salt content is one of the factors that should be considered. The savory seasoning in seblak, combined with processed toppings, can increase sodium intake. Excessive sodium consumption over time can increase the risk of high blood pressure, particularly when it is not balanced with a healthy diet.
The level of spiciness can also affect the digestive system. For some people, highly spicy foods may trigger symptoms such as stomach pain, a burning sensation in the stomach, diarrhea, or heartburn. These symptoms may be more likely to occur in people with digestive problems or those who are sensitive to spicy foods.
In addition, seblak prepared with a significant amount of oil and fatty ingredients may worsen acid reflux symptoms in some people. Therefore, the frequency and portion size should be considered, particularly for those who experience digestive discomfort after consuming spicy or oily foods.
However, this does not mean seblak needs to be completely avoided. The dish can be made more balanced by adding vegetables and protein sources while reducing the amount of salt, oil, and spiciness. Proper hygiene of the ingredients and food preparation area is also important to reduce the risk of health problems caused by contaminated food.
Seblak can still be enjoyed as part of a varied diet. What matters is paying attention to how often it is consumed, portion size, level of spiciness, and choice of toppings, so that this favorite West Java dish does not replace the body's need for a wider variety of nutritious foods.
