RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Rendang is a signature Indonesian dish that has gained widespread international recognition. Renowned for its spicy, savory, and rich, spice-laden flavor profile, rendang also serves as a cultural ambassador, introducing the culinary richness of the Indonesian archipelago to the global community.
According to information from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the popularity of rendang is evident not only in its presence at Indonesian restaurants abroad but also through international accolades. The dish was included in CNN International’s list of the "World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods" in 2011 and garnered renewed attention when it appeared on the "World’s 50 Best Foods" list in 2018.
Beyond its popularity, rendang holds deep historical and cultural significance for the Minangkabau people. Originating in West Sumatra centuries ago, the dish evolved into an integral part of local tradition. It is also viewed as a symbol of harmony and unity within Minangkabau social life.
Rendang is typically made from beef cooked with coconut milk and an array of spices such as galangal, lemongrass, chili, and shallots. The cooking process is long-drawn and carried out in stages until the coconut milk evaporates and the spices fully permeate the meat, resulting in a distinctive texture and flavor.
Due to the complexity of this process, rendang was historically not an everyday meal; instead, it was usually served at significant events such as weddings, traditional ceremonies, and religious gatherings. Over time, however, the dish has become more widely available and is now recognized globally as a quintessential Indonesian culinary delight.
Rendang’s popularity abroad began to grow in the 1980s as foreign tourists visiting Indonesia became increasingly familiar with the dish. Its reach subsequently expanded through Indonesian restaurants, culinary promotions, and various initiatives designed to introduce Indonesian cuisine to the international community.
Global interest in rendang also surged following comments made by Chef Gordon Ramsay on a television program in 2020. His remarks sparked a reaction among Indonesians and became a widely discussed topic in the media; at the same time, this attention helped raise rendang's profile among the international public.
Ultimately, rendang has become more than just a dish; it has also become a component of Indonesia's cultural diplomacy. Its popularity has created opportunities for Indonesian culinary businesses to expand into international markets, while simultaneously generating income and employment for Indonesians abroad. Through rendang, Indonesia's flavors, history, and cultural values continue to be shared with the world.
