Klaten Chicken Soup Sets National and World Records

RRI.CO.ID, Klaten - Indonesia's Klaten Regency served 9,222 portions of its signature chicken soup in Klaten on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The event marked the regency's 222nd anniversary while promoting one of its iconic local dishes.

Thousands of residents from all 26 subdistricts gathered at Klaten Square. They enjoyed free servings of the traditional chicken soup prepared for the celebration.

The 9,222 portions earned two recognitions from the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI). The achievement was recorded as Indonesia's largest chicken soup serving and the world's largest serving of a local culinary specialty.

Klaten chicken soup, locally called "Sop Ayam", features a clear broth with a rich aroma of Indonesian spices. It is served with tender chicken, glass noodles, and crackers, offering a light yet flavorful taste.

Senior Representative of the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) Ari Andriani said the achievement celebrates Indonesia's culinary heritage. She hoped the record would encourage greater appreciation for local traditional foods.

"Hopefully, this achievement will inspire us to love and preserve our local culinary heritage even more," she said.

Klaten Regent, Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, said the record became a special gift for the regency's 222nd anniversary. He added the event also promotes Klaten chicken soup as a culinary attraction for domestic and international visitors.

"Today, we are not only breaking national and world records, but also promoting Klaten's signature chicken soup so it becomes better known, especially among visitors from outside Klaten. We hope tourists will make Klaten chicken soup part of their travel experience," he said.
