RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - When the weather gets hot, nothing feels better than a cold and refreshing treat. While modern ice cream and trendy desserts continue to grow in popularity, Indonesia has its own traditional frozen delicacy that is just as enjoyable. One of Indonesia's most nostalgic frozen treats is Es Goyang, a nostalgic popsicle known not only for its creamy taste but also for its unique preparation.
For many Indonesians who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, Es Goyang was a familiar sight outside schools and along neighborhood streets. Sold from wooden pushcarts, this traditional dessert became a favorite among children. Although it is closely associated with Jakarta, some people believe Es Goyang is actually originated in Bandung, West Java before becoming popular in many parts of the country.
Its name, which literally means "shaken ice," comes from the way it is made. After the mixture is poured into molds, the container is gently shaken for several minutes while surrounded by ice until the mixture freezes evenly. This distinctive technique gave the dessert both its name and its identity.
Es Goyang is made from simple ingredients, including coconut milk, sugar, mung bean starch, and flavorings. Over the years, people have introduced a variety of flavors such as chocolate, avocado, durian, and other fruits, giving the traditional treat a modern twist while preserving its classic appeal.
The preparation remains largely unchanged. The cooked mixture is poured into molds, placed inside a container filled with ice, and fitted with a small bamboo stick before it completely freezes. The molds are then shaken continuously, producing a smooth, creamy texture that sets Es Goyang apart from ordinary ice pops.

Many people enjoy Es Goyang by dipping it into melted chocolate and adding toppings such as chocolate sprinkles or crushed peanuts before taking the first bite. The combination of its soft texture and crunchy coating creates a simple yet satisfying dessert that continues to evoke fond childhood memories for many Indonesians.
As culinary trends continue to evolve, Es Goyang remains a reminder that traditional Indonesian treats still have a special place in people's hearts. More than just a refreshing snack on a hot day, it represents a piece of Indonesia's rich street food culture and a taste of nostalgia shared across generations.
