RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Amid the wide variety of culinary offerings in Indonesia's capital, Soto Betawi remains one of the city's most sought-after traditional dishes. Its rich, creamy broth, combined with tender beef and offal, creates a distinctive savory flavor that has made it a favorite among food lovers.
Beyond its taste, Soto Betawi also reflects Indonesia's long history of cultural exchange. Historical accounts suggest that soto was originally introduced by the Chinese community. In his book Nusa Jawa Silang Budaya (Java in Cross-Cultural Perspective), historian Denys Lombard wrote that several dishes of Chinese origin, including chicken soto and tripe soto, eventually became part of Indonesia's local culinary tradition.
Initially, soto was sold primarily by Chinese-Indonesian vendors before being widely adopted by local communities. Over time, the dish evolved into numerous regional varieties, each reflecting local ingredients and culinary traditions.
Among the most famous is Soto Betawi. According to the Kebudayaan Betawi website, the term "Soto Betawi" gained popularity in the late 1970s. The name was first introduced by a Chinese-Indonesian soto vendor, Lie Boen Po, also known as Lie Bowen Bo, who sold the dish at Prinsen Park, now known as Lokasari People's Entertainment Park in Jakarta.
Before the name "Soto Betawi" became widely recognized, vendors typically named their stalls after themselves, using names such as "Soto Pak X" or "Soto Kaki." As the dish grew in popularity, the term "Soto Betawi" gradually became the standard name and an iconic symbol of Jakarta's culinary heritage.
One of Soto Betawi's defining characteristics is its flavorful broth. Unlike most other Indonesian soto varieties, its broth is made with a blend of coconut milk and fresh milk, giving it a thicker texture and a rich, creamy taste. The dish is commonly served with beef and assorted offal, although some vendors also offer other cuts according to customers' preferences.
Today, Soto Betawi remains one of Jakarta's most celebrated culinary icons, easily found throughout the city. It continues to be enjoyed not only by local residents but also by visitors eager to experience the authentic flavors of Betawi cuisine and explore one of the capital's signature gastronomic traditions.
