  • QRIS users reach 67 million as digital payments expand across Indonesia.
  • BI strengthens payment infrastructure and targets 69.32 million QRIS users by year-end.

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The number of people using the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS) has reached around 67 million, equivalent to about a quarter of Indonesia’s population. Bank Indonesia (BI) said the growth reflects the increasing adoption of digital payments among the public.

“QRIS now has 67 million users. That means perhaps a quarter of Indonesia’s population is already using QRIS,” BI Governor Destry Damayanti said at the Digital Economy and Finance Festival (FEKDI) x Indonesia Fintech Summit & Expo (IFSE) 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Destry said the growing use of digital payments is contributing to a shift in consumer preferences from cash transactions to digital payment methods.

The trend is visible in various activities, including shopping at traditional markets and transactions at public events, where QRIS is increasingly being used.

Despite the rapid growth of digital payments, cash transactions remain an important part of Indonesia’s payment system. Destry said merchants should continue to provide cash payment options for consumers who still prefer them.

“However, we do not prohibit people from using cash. Payments in Indonesia can still be made digitally or in cash. Therefore, merchants must continue to accept cash payments if customers choose to use them,” she said.

Destry noted that the shift toward digital payments has also affected currency circulation, with banknotes and coins still growing in circulation but at a slower pace.

She added that cash remains necessary given Indonesia’s vast geography and archipelagic nature. Communities in frontier and remote regions continue to rely on cash, particularly where telecommunications networks remain limited.

During the opening of FEKDI x IFSE 2026, Destry said expanding QRIS adoption remains a key priority in Indonesia’s digital economic and financial transformation agenda under the Indonesian Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030.

BI targets reaching 69.32 million QRIS users by the end of 2026, representing annual growth of 20.26 percent.

In addition to expanding QRIS adoption domestically, BI is strengthening cross-border payment connectivity through the expansion of cross-border QRIS.

“The objective is to improve the convenience of cross-border payments. These strategies are also an important part of boosting purchasing power and supporting the government’s Asta Cita program,” Destry said.

BI is also accelerating the adoption of the Indonesian Credit Card (KKI). Since its launch in August 2026, 32,457 cards have been issued and activated.

Meanwhile, transactions conducted through the National Standard for Open Payment APIs (SNAP) reached 2.69 billion as of August 2026, up 67.16 percent year-on-year (yoy).

To strengthen payment infrastructure, BI continues to optimize BI-FAST, whose retail transaction volume reached 549 million transactions, an increase of 37.72 percent yoy.

Destry added that BI is developing a new, more scalable and modular BI-FAST system, modernizing BI Real-Time Gross Settlement (BI-RTGS), and strengthening data infrastructure to maintain the resilience and integrity of payment transactions.

BI, together with the Financial Services Authority (OJK), officially opened FEKDI x IFSE 2026 on Thursday. The event is part of efforts to accelerate the digital economy and digital finance through policies that are impactful, inclusive, and integrated. ***
