RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – PT Petrokimia Gresik (PG), a subsidiary of the state-owned fertilizer holding company Pupuk Indonesia, is strengthening the domestic supply of sulfuric acid to maintain fertilizer production and mitigate risks in the global supply chain.

Petrokimia Gresik President Director Daconi Khotob said the company has partnered with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) to source sulfuric acid from the Manyar Smelter for 2026–2028.

“Sulfuric acid is one of Petrokimia Gresik’s primary raw materials, alongside natural gas. Certainty and reliability of supply are crucial for maintaining sustainable fertilizer production,” Daconi said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday, September 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Sulfuric acid is used to produce Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium (NPK) fertilizer, Super Phosphate-36 (SP-36), and ammonium sulfate (ZA). Additional domestic supply is expected to strengthen Petrokimia Gresik’s operations and support the fulfillment of government mandates.

Petrokimia Gresik, the state-owned mining holding company MIND ID, and PTFI discussed a phased increase in supply from the Manyar Smelter during a meeting at the MIND ID office on Wednesday, September 9. The three companies also discussed the sustainability of sulfuric acid supply from PTFI Smelting.

Strengthening domestic sources is crucial as geopolitical dynamics heighten the risk of global supply chain disruptions. A raw material supply closer to industrial needs can reduce reliance on external sources and ensure the continuity of fertilizer production.

This collaboration also connects mineral downstream processing with the fertilizer industry. Products from PTFI’s mineral processing can be used as inputs for the agricultural sector, which plays a strategic role in food security.

“This collaboration demonstrates how domestic mineral downstream processing can benefit other strategic sectors,” Daconi said.

MIND ID will facilitate follow-up coordination between PTFI and Petrokimia Gresik. This effort aims to optimize downstream product use, strengthen coordination among state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and ensure the sustainability of the national fertilizer industry.

The partnership is expected to reinforce the raw material supply chain and enhance the industry’s resilience to global volatility. A more reliable supply of sulfuric acid will ultimately support agricultural productivity and food security in Indonesia. ***
