Retail Sales Performance Expected to Grow in August 2026: BI

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Bank Indonesia (BI) projects that the Real Sales Index (IPR) in August 2026 will grow by 0.5 percent year‑on‑year (yoy). However, retail sales performance in August contracted by 0.1 percent month‑to‑month (mtm).

BI’s Executive Director of the Communications Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, said annual retail sales growth in August 2026 was supported by two categories.

“This retail sales growth was primarily driven by sales in the Spare Parts and Accessories category, followed by the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco category,” Denny said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Meanwhile, the monthly decline in August was influenced by weaker sales in other product groups, despite growth in the Information and Communication Equipment Group, the Motor Vehicle Fuel Group, and the Spare Parts and Accessories Group.

In July 2026, the IPR grew by 1.1 percent (yoy), an improvement from the previous month’s contraction of 3.0 percent. “This performance was primarily driven by increased annual sales growth in the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Group, as well as the Other Goods Group,” Denny said.

Monthly, retail sales in July 2026 contracted by 0.1 percent. “This was influenced by the normalization of demand following the National Religious Holidays (HBKN) and school breaks,” he added.

On the price front, inflationary pressure in October 2026 and January 2027 is projected to ease, as reflected in the General Price Expectations Index (IEH). The IEH for October 2026 and January 2027 stood at 146.5 and 166.0, respectively--lower than the previous periods’ readings of 155.2 and 168.1. (Gusti Panji)
