- Indonesia ranked in the world's top four for Islamic financial assets, reaching Rp3,131 trillion (US$178.5 billion).
- While national Sharia inclusion remains low at 13%, regions like Aceh serve as a national role model with a 72% inclusion rate.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia has secured a spot among the top four global leaders in Islamic finance alongside Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. This global ranking was highlighted as the country’s total sharia financial assets reached Rp3,131 trillion, or around US$178.5 billion.
The impressive growth was driven by continuous contributions from the Islamic banking sector, non-bank financial industries, and the Islamic capital market. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto officially announced these milestone figures during his speech at the Symposium of the Indonesian Association of Islamic Economists in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Airlangga said, “Sharia financial assets have reached Rp3,131 trillion and rank among the top four alongside Malaysia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.”
Despite the massive total asset growth, the government noted that financial inclusion and literacy rates still require strong support to reach their full potential. Current data shows that Sharia financial inclusion stands at around 13%, while its literacy rate has surpassed 43.07%.
“As for this IAEI task, our Sharia financial inclusion rate is still at 13.14%, far below the conventional inclusion rate. On the positive side, Sharia financial literacy is higher, at 43.07%. There is still potential here. More than 14 million people can be encouraged to become more financially included, particularly in rural areas, among farmers, fishermen, and MSMEs,” he explained.
To address this challenge, the government is highlighting Aceh Province as a successful role model for full sharia financial integration. The province has demonstrated how strong collaboration across banking, social finance, and non-bank sectors can create an inclusive economic environment.
“One of the financial role models identified by the government is in Aceh Province. In Aceh, we see a comprehensive sharia financial model with synergy among the banking sector, non-bank financial institutions, and social finance—or SIZWAF—through Baitulmal. Sharia financial inclusion in Aceh stands at 72%, which can serve as a model for other regions. Its financial literacy stands at 65.18%, the highest at the national level,” Airlangga noted.
